My name is Sarah Jones. I moved to Texas in December 2007 with my husband Drew to pursue midwifery after spending most of my life living overseas. Here is a brief summary of what influenced my love and passion for families expecting a new member in their family.
In 1988, my family moved to China to be missionaries. My family felt a burden to start an orphanage in 1992 where I was able to spend much of my time helping with infant care. My love for midwifery grew tremendously during those years of working in the orphanage.
After my freshman year in college I joined a mission group called Mercy in Action and was trained as a midwife. I went to the Philippines with 15 other women to reach out to families living in the slums of Manila. After spending a year and a half in Manila, I had helped over 160 women deliver their babies at the birthing center. In 2006, I returned to the United States to become a certified professional midwife through the North American Registry of Midwives and later became a licensed midwife in Texas.
I then returned to China for a year and a half and began my own private practice. Speaking Mandarin Chinese opened the door for me to work with Chinese nationals as well as the large expatriate community living in Beijing. There were only two foreign midwives working in Beijing, which gave me the opportunity to assist hundreds of women through various stages of their pregnancy, labor, and birth. I was able to offer families a chance to have a natural and comfortable birth outside the common practice of delivering in a cold hospital setting with high cesarean rates.
I am a firm believer of women allowing their bodies to do what God has created them for in pregnancy and birth. In Beijing, women had no choice but to give birth in hospitals where they were not allowed to labor in peace and much unnecessary intervention was done. Offering home births and labor support in the international and local hospitals gave women the chance to succeed in their births. Education is key in making families victorious in having great outcomes in every decision that needs to be made during this unique time in their lives.
